In the sweltering New Orleans summer heat, Blanche arrives at her sister Stella’s home, desperate and running from her complicated past. But it ignites simmering tensions within the walls of the stuffy apartment. And all the while, Stella’s husband Stanley, played by Vladimir Karamazov with both rawness and sensitivity, provokes the truths Blanche so desperately wants to bury.

The play A Streetcar named Desire by Tennessee Williams became a theatre hit in 1947 and brought him Pulitzer. It has been a vehicle for stellar stage and screen performances for a number of actors, including Vivian Leigh, Marlon Brando, and more recently Gillian Anderson, Paul Mescal and many others. The play belongs to the American realism after World War II. Williams enriches it with a fine sense of metaphor and deep psychological approach. In most of his works he explores social problems through the idea of the basic role of violence and sexuality.

The play has been rarely staged in Bulgaria. It was back in 2006, when the Varna Summer International Theatre Festival selected a production of it directed by the renown theatre maker Krikor Azaryan for the Bulgarian Army Theatre. In his staging Anton Ugrinov together with his prominent artistic team approaches A Streetcar Named Desire with emotional depth as a story of desires that push one to the edge.
