Today, Bertolt Brecht’s anti-war parable Mother Courage and Her Children, written during World War II, feels more relevant than ever. The action unfolds in the 17th century during the Thirty Years’ War, telling the story of Anna Fierling, nicknamed Mother Courage, who tries to profit from the war but ultimately loses her children. The play presents war as a “deal of the powerful,” where all values are trampled upon.
In his production, director Stoyan Radev follows Brecht’s method of leading to a moral lesson through entertainment. He approaches the world of the play with irony and a critical perspective, emphasizing the responsibility of the “common people” in great historical events.
Nikola Toromanov’s scenography transforms the performance into a visual experience, creating a raw atmosphere with minimalist yet striking elements that highlight the contrast between the ordinary individual and the looming shadows of history.
At the center of the production is actress Albena Pavlova, whose remarkable portrayal of Mother Courage has been unanimously praised by critics. She is supported by a strong ensemble cast, delivering a multi-layered and timely performance infused with dark humor.
