Javor Gardev first staged The Pillowman, written by the renowned Irish scriptwriter (In Bruges) and playwright Martin McDonagh (2004 Laurence Olivier Award for best new play), in 2005 at Varna Drama Theatre and caused a real sensation. In 2011, he re-made his performance for Theatre 199with the same creative team. The Pillowman provocatively reveals the conflict between intelligence services and a writer whose terrifying stories about child murders oddly happen in reality. The interaction between fictional and “real” is on focus in this tense theatre thriller full of black humour.
