CHEKHOV’S CLASSICAL PLAY COMES TO LIFE IN A NEW INTERPRETATION.

“The Seagull” by the Russian playwright A. P. Chekhov’s is the first of his plays, which have become part of the canon of modern drama and changed forever the laws of theatre. The pursuit of revolution in art and living according to one’s own rules are also the main topics in this tragic story which was paradoxically dubbed a comedy by its author. It interweaves the fates of famous writer Boris Trigorin, romantic Nina Zarechnaya, actress Irina Arkadina whose career is on the wane and her rebellious son with theatrical ambitions Konstantin Treplyov. And yet the question of why Chekhov again and what his meaning is today constantly reappears. For Nina Nikolikj, the young and promising Macedonian director the answer is clear: “We will stop asking ourselves that question when we finally realize that Chekhov’s plays are life – a pure, cruel, concentrated life that happens everywhere, in all languages and at any time.” Her performance with the committed and sensitive actors of the Macedonian National Theatre is a proof of it.
