The Marx Family Saga is a large-scale, provocative performance that explores the figure and legacy of Karl Marx beyond ideological clichés and historical dogmas. Drawing on the text by Juan Goytisolo, the production transforms the biography of Marx and his family into a starting point for reflection on the contemporary world—social inequalities, crises of solidarity, migration, political utopias, and the collapse of grand narratives.
Jan Mikulášek creates a vivid visual dramatic theatre in which documentary elements blend with irony and grotesque. Historical scenes intertwine with present-day commentary, and the figure of Marx unfolds simultaneously as a thinker, a social symbol, and a vulnerable human being. The performance deliberately avoids definitive judgments, placing the audience in the role of an active interpreter.
The production has been presented at major theatre forums in the Czech Republic and is part of the repertoire of one of the most authoritative alternative theatres in Central Europe. In this way, The Marx Family Saga establishes itself as a stage work that connects a 19th-century historical figure with the anxieties and contradictions of the 21st century.
Theatre Husa na provázku is one of the most interesting and influential avant-garde theatre centers in the Czech Republic, founded in 1967.
