In The Tempest by William Shakespeare one of the playwright’s last and most enigmatic works director Viktor Bodó offers a radical and analytical stage interpretation in which theatre itself becomes a metaphor for power. Shakespeare’s story of betrayal, exile, and magic unfolds as a layered theatrical reality, in which illusion is a tool and staging transforms into authority. In Bodó’s reading, Prospero is both creator and destroyer of realities, orchestrating the fates of others until he himself must confront the necessity of relinquishing his power.
Viktor Bodó is among the most recognizable directors on the contemporary European stage. He is known to Bulgarian audiences from the 2017 guest performance of Diary of a Madman after Nikolai Gogol, presented as a part of the Varna Summer International Theatre Festival. Founder of the theatre company Szputnyik Shipping Company, Bodó works across Hungary, Austria, and Germany, and has received numerous awards, including the prestigious European Theatre Prize – New Theatrical Realities(2016).
