In Theodoros Terzopoulos’s staging, Waiting for Godot places Beckett’s play among the “ruins of the world” — in a near or foreseeable future where the wounds of the present and the past remain open, and with them, the very act of waiting itself. Within this extreme zone of human existence, the performance explores the minimal conditions under which life might begin again and recover its meaning. The director’s interpretation highlights two intertwined directions: the effort to communicate with the Other outside us — the person in front of us, despite all obstacles — and the effort to encounter the Other within us, that dark and difficult-to-name realm of repressed fears, desires, instincts, dreams, and madness.
The Greek theatre director Theodoros Terzopoulos is among the most prominent theatre makers of our time. In 1985, he founded the Attis Theatre, which became the primary space for his long-term research into the tragic, the body, the voice, and the limits of the actor’s presence. Recipient of numerous international awards, Terzopoulos is also the founder and chairman of the Theatre Olympics — one of the most prestigious global theatre events. His groundbreaking 1986 production of The Bacchae by Euripides radically transformed the understanding of how ancient tragedy can be staged in contemporary theatre.
Over the decades, he has directed productions worldwide based on texts by Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides, Brecht, Lorca, Müller, Beckett, Pasternak, Strindberg, and contemporary Greek authors. The method he developed — studied in theatre academies and universities across various countries — views the actor as a bearer of intense physical and spiritual tension. Books and studies dedicated to his directing approach have been published in more than ten languages.
Emilia Romagna Theatre is recognized by the Italian Ministry of Culture as one of the country’s national theatres. It collaborates with Italian and international creative teams, operating across seven stages in the Emilia-Romagna region.
