When artists from different contexts gather together and start to cooperate, a reconsideration of the place they come from and of the making of their own artistic practices inevitably happens. In “Balkan Dance Reality Show” four performers from Bulgaria, Croatia and Germany scrutinize the concept of the Balkans and it becomes their zone of play: it takes the form of an atmosphere, of an exotic imaginary place, of an odd fiction populated with fancy creatures, of a reality show whose authors and participants turn out to be the same. Against the background of Stravinsky’s emblematic “The Rite of Spring” (whose 1912 choreography by Vaslav Nijinsky was a turning point for the development of contemporary dance) and of an authentic text taken from from the popular US reality show “Work of Art”, the four performers look about their own place in the world of art. And the inevitable questions arise: what is a work of art today? How is it created, how is it evaluated, and how do artists themselves think about it? And, ultimately, is everything a show?
