Eurydice by Jean Anouilh is a modern interpretation of the ancient myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, in which one of the most significant French dramatists of the 20th century relocates the classical story into a contemporary setting. Instead of the underworld, the action unfolds at a railway station — a transitional space of encounters, separations, and chance — where the love story of the two young protagonists begins. Anouilh transforms the familiar myth into a reflection on fate, choice, and the impossibility of escaping one’s own fears.

Characteristic of Anouilh’s dramaturgy is the conflict between ideal and reality, the longing for pure love, and the painful sense that happiness often remains unattainable. In Eurydice, the love between the characters appears as a sudden and absolute impulse, but also as a trial in which doubt and fear may prove stronger than the feeling itself.

The latest production of the play on the stage of the Theatre Bulgarian Army is directed by Ivan Urumov, who highlights both the mythological and contemporary layers of the text. In his interpretation, the story of Orpheus and Eurydice unfolds as a parable about the fragility of love and the impossibility of salvation in a world where chance and fear often determine human decisions.
