Director Katya Petrova calls Peer Gynt “a mad play with extreme states of the characters, to the point of explosion, to the point of demonic.” Written in 1867, it is now one of the masterpieces of world literature. Unrestrained and phantasmagoric, the play depicts the fate of the eponymous character from Norwegian folklore who is searching for his life path. All his life, Peer Gynt wants to be the hero, to win, to be “an emperor with thousand courtiers.” He declares himself a citizen of the world and wishes to rule it. And at the end of his life he has to answer for what he has done.
