In a thriving Norwegian town, the chief physician, Dr. Stockmann, discovers that the water in the town’s famous spa resort is contaminated—a revelation that threatens the prosperity of the entire community. Determined to make his findings public, he faces fierce opposition from his own brother, a municipal official who sees his political and financial interests at risk.

Ibsen’s Public Enemy written in 1882, resonates powerfully in today’s post-truth era. Blending elements of a political thriller and family drama, the play tackles timeless themes—the individual against the system, the fight for justice, and the manipulation of truth by corrupt authorities and media.

Director Chris Sharkov, one of the leading figures in contemporary Bulgarian theatre, approaches his second staging of this modern classic as a rap-like protest against the distortion of reality in today’s world, where truth and lies blur, and public welfare is increasingly devalued. His bold and engaging interpretation is reinforced by powerful performances from the cast.
