The performance “Shakespeare in Love” is the first Bulgarian stage adaptation of the famous film directed by John Madden in 1998, starring Gwyneth Paltrow, Joseph Fiennes and Judi Dench, which won 7 Academy Awards, including for best original screenplay. The theatrical version reinforces its qualities of a truly brilliant comedy. It is based on the misunderstandings surrounding the writing of the famous play “Romeo and Juliet” and the ban on women performing on the stage. Many characters, cues and plot devices refer to William Shakespeare’s plays as Plamen Markov’s performance adds the Bard’s sonnets to them. The whole artistic entourage is busy explaining when, how and why one falls in love as the renowned British humour is elegantly employed to serve that end. Historicity in the stylistics of the performance lends the fictitious love story even more romance and cognition. The result is a performance that guarantees quality pleasure and entertainment.
