Sisyphans is a documentary film dedicated to one of the boldest and most significant phenomena in Bulgarian theatre during the 1950s. At its centre stands the so-called “Burgas Four” — Metodi Andonov, Yulia Ognianova, Leon Daniel, and Vili Tsankov — who, together with a group of young actors, created in Burgas a theatre radically different from the imposed canon of Socialist Realism. Through their daring artistic explorations, their new stylized and intellectual stage language, and their introduction of Brecht’s “alienation effect,” they became a symbol of resistance against dogma and ideological control in art. The film traces this brief yet legendary “miracle” in Burgas, which left a lasting mark on the history of Bulgarian theatre.
