We raised the curtains for World Theatre in Sofia 2024

László Góndor’s unusual one-man show Living the Dream with Grandma opened this year’s edition of the World Theatre in Sofia platform. The production arrived to the capital city shortly after taking part in the International Theatre Olympiad in Paris. Through skilful acting on stage as well as with audio and video recordings, it presented us with a touching story about the rapprochement and mutual appreciation of director and performer László Góndor and his 97-year-old grandmother, a survivor of the Holocaust and communism. In just a few months, the show has been performed 48 times to packed houses at the Traffo Center for Contemporary Arts in Budapest, 13 times at local and international festivals, and has won a number of national awards for best independent performance in Hungary.

The Platform programme continues on 7 June with the fantastic Eduardo Guerrero and his new original flamenco show, Lighthouse. Inspired by the poetic image of the lighthouse, together with musicians and singers he will dazzle us with different styles of the booming Spanish dance.

On June 3, the digital festival programme starts with the online streaming of Galin Stoev’s successful performance The Double Inconstancy on the stage of the ThéâtredelaCité in Toulouse, of which he is also the artistic director. You can watch it HERE from June 3, 7 pm to June 6, 7 pm (in French with Bulgarian subtitles). It offers a contemporary reading of the classic French comedy from 1723, juxtaposed with one of the controversial themes of our time – post-truth. The production was nominated for the Award of French theatre critics 2020 for performance of the year, for best stage design (Alban Ho Van’s), for a Theatre Revelation of the Year (for Maud Gripon and Thibaut Prigent) and for best actress (Melodie Richard).

The baton in the digital programme is taken on June 4, when at 7 pm. HERE starts streaming of the famous performance The Seagull by A. P. Chekhov staged by one of the great figures of contemporary European theatre – Oskaras Koršunovas at his theatre OKT / City Theatre – Vilnius, Lithuania. It was staged in the laboratory studio of the theatre and creates a common intimate space between actors and spectators. The platform will close on 9 July with a live performance, on the stage of the National Theatre, of Koršunovas’ interpretation of William Shakespeare’s Othello, which masterfully explores the modern world and its contradictions.

The online streamings in the digital programme are with a free access on the territory of Bulgaria for 72 hours. The performances are in original language and re subtitled in Bulgarian, and “The Seagull” – also in English.
